Many years ago our parish was fortunate enough to have an evening with Matthew Kelly. At the time, I did not know who Mr. Kelly was. I attended Mass regularly, read the Bible diligently, and lectored once a month. I was starting to understand my Catholic faith, but there was much I did not understand. And I certainly I didn’t know any contemporary speakers, even one as famous as Mr. Kelly.
But something he said stuck with me that night. He spoke about taking one thing away from Mass and writing it down. Just one thing. Over time, just like the mustard seed, this small beginning would become a powerful spiritual tool. He called it a Mass Journal.
For a number of years the thought languished. I recalled it every so often, but only after the fact, and with not enough clarity to establish a habit. Then I got my first smart phone, and discovered that there were a number of database apps that could be configured to record information in whatever form I wished. I took the plunge.

It has been almost three years now since I started recording those thoughts after Mass. To be fair, I haven’t managed to write something after every single Mass, but I’ve been consistent enough that the thoughts have grown. Perhaps they still could be the devotional aid Mr. Kelly said they could become. I’m not exactly sure, but I do know the practice has sharpened my mind while at Mass, and has caused me to spend time in reflection both before and after Mass. And to grow in my faith. Which I suppose is what all of this should be about.
So I will start here, on my blog. I’m going to turn back time, and post my thoughts on the date I recorded them. I hope to catch up to the present, but for now, I’m content to start from the beginning.
